Father Andrews visiting and more

From Deacon Ron Reno (2024-06-26):

God willing, Father Andrews and Anneliese will be here for our services Saturday. Pray for traveling mercies for them; our weather in Nebraska has been strange all spring and now even into the summer solstice. We are always blessed to have the full Eucharist when Father comes. It is called the Eucharist because it is an offer of thanksgiving to God. We believe that the presence of Christ is real, true and important for our souls in our relationship with God. When Father comes in celebration, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Ghost.  Father is the instrument of that action. We are fortunate to have Father to come celebrate and set us up with the Pre-Sanctifed Gifts so that this Deacon can fulfill his assignment to serve this mission church. Father is a very humble man and I strive every day to be more like him and Father Ponec, RIP. Please come and celebrate with us this weekend.

We had a lovely sung morning prayer and Communion of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts this past weekend. Thank you Nick for leading us in MP. Your voice is a gift from heaven and our small choir is testimony of God working through you. Robert did a wonderful job reading the first lesson. It is a blessing for us to chant our canticles,  the Venite,  Te Deum and the Benedictus. Learning to chant properly is a work in progress for me.

O GOD, the protector of all that trust in thee, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy; Increase and multiply upon us thy mercy; that thou being our ruler and guide, we may pass through things temporal, that we finally lose not the things eternal. Grant this, O Heavenly Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ALMIGHTY God, by whose providence thy servant John the Baptist was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of thy Son our Saviour by preaching repentance; Make us so to follow his doctrine and holy life, that we may truly repent according to his preaching; and after his example constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truth’s sake; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Attached is Father’s homily and a couple of pictures from our vacation to 14000 feet above sea level in the Rocky Mountains. It is quite an experience to do MP at that elevation. It was windy, cold but very spiritual. His vastness, His artists palette of this earth is never ending. God bless, Deacon

Trinity1 homily and more

From Deacon Ron Reno:

Transubstantiation. Father’s homily was based on our Holy Day of Corpus Christi on May 30th. The homily was given on how Corpus Christi was actually instituted to the honor of the Sacrament of the Eucharist itself. Please read this historical narrative and homily by Father Andrews. What I would like to add to this conversation is  on transubstantiation and how we believe the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ. We believe the Real Presence is there. Jesus Christ our Saviour being incarnate by God’s word took flesh and blood for our salvation. We also believe that bread and wine consecrated by the priest’s words, prayers and spirit is changed to Christ’s body and blood. It is all by the power of God’s Spirit and Word, and it is meant to transform us, who are imperfect people, to have a more personal relationship with Jesus. Deacon Reno cannot do this and that is the important reason we are fortunate to have a priest for this mission church. Thank you Father Andrews for praying for the Spirit (epiklesis) and standing in the place of Christ for this mission. “This is my Body. This is my Blood.” can only come from a man with priestly orders. What a blessing it is to receive the Lord’s body into our physical body. Hallelujah!!!

We had a chanted and sung Litany for this First Sunday after Trinity. The organ prelude from the “Organ Mass for the Convents” was a great intro to the Litany and to the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. We are so lucky to have such God filled music in our midst.

O GOD, the strength of all those who put their trust in thee; Mercifully accept our prayers; and because, through the weakness of our mortal nature, we can do no good thing without thee, grant us the help of thy grace, that in keeping thy commandments, we may please thee, both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Deacon Reno will be and our organist Nick may be gone June 15. Deacon will email if this is to be changed. Deacon is taking his daughter and granddaughter to Colorado for fun and geology. Our 12 year granddaughter is a budding geologist and the Rockies is a great place to explore. It will be fun to explain geo-thermal water to her in Steamboat Springs. Do MP at your home that Saturday. God bless, Deacon

Ascension Homily and more

From Deacon Ron Reno:

We were blessed! Father Andrews and Anneliese made it for the Ascension service. After all our tornado activity recently; it was wonderful to see them here safely. Earlier in the week Father suggested we do the Ascension of our Lord service. Father aspersed everyone while the choir sang the Vidi Aquam for that Rite. It was pretty dramatic that Pascal candle was extinguished during the reading of the Gospel as “He departed them.” Father also called all the mothers attending to the front to give them a blessing. That was another special moment. Thank you Father for all you do for this mission church. After Mass our mission group along with Father and Anneliese went to lunch at the LaCasa Restaurant. Thank you Vestry!

The college of Saint Mary’s graduation ceremonies will be this Saturday in the chapel. We will sing Evensong to celebrate Whitsunday/Pentecost. Our worship will be held this Sunday, May19 at 4PM. Please take note of this change. There will be no Anglican service at the Chapel this Saturday.

GRANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that like as we do believe thy only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into heaven; so that we may also in heart and mind thither ascend, and with him continually dwell, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen. Collect for Ascension. God bless, Deacon

Fourth Sunday after Easter Homily and more

From Deacon Ron Reno:

Regina Coeli. We have been chanting this antiphon at the end of each service all of Eastertide. It is a chant that dates back to the 13th Century of praise and veneration of the Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus. From antiquity, Mary has been called “Theotokos” or God bearer (Mother of God) and deserves our gratitude through this Eastertide. The word “Theotokos” has been in use since the early third century. We have had a magnificent festal season this year that has focused on the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Without Jesus we are nothing and of all things to do, we need to cling our souls to the Risen Lord. Chanting the Regina Coeli honors her and shows our love of God. Because through her, He became incarnate in the flesh. Thank you God.

Father Andrews did not make his journey here last week because of bad weather. We seem to have had many tornadoes dancing all around the eastern part of the state. Many houses have been destroyed and families displaced. We need to pray for them and perhaps we should donate to the Red Cross. The Red Cross here does an admirable job. God willing Father and Anneliese plan to journey here May 11, for the Sunday after Ascension service. We need to pray for traveling mercies for them.

David and Julie are back in town and plan to be here for Rogation Sunday. It is always a blessing for us to see them. They are still members and part of our mission church. It is admirable they have moved to Michigan to be closer to their aging parents. We are thankful that they can be with us often. God bless you two and we will be praying for traveling mercies for you on your travel back.

O ALMIGHTY God, who alone canst order order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men; Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.  Collect for Fourth Sunday after Easter.

May God be merciful to all those displaced, Deacon

Palm Sunday and more

From Deacon Ron Reno:

We were blessed to have Father Andrews and Anneliese for our Palm Sunday Service. Without Father we would not be able to feed God’s children with the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Father always makes sure we have both elements in our tabernacle for use of the Presanctifed Gifts which I am allowed by our Bishops to do. Baptism, Confirmation and Communion brings us to the fullness of our life in Christ. Receiving Holy Communion brings us grace that affects us both spiritually and physically. Spiritually it helps our souls to be united with Christ and physically it leads us closer to sanctification of our own bodies. God bless you Father for all you do for this mission church.

The choir did all the antiphons for the Palm Sunday Rite including for the blessing and distribution of the Palms. Thank you choir!  The vocal postlude “Behold and SEE” from Handel was exceptional. We actually succeeded doing the Passion of Mathew as a church group; it was a true blessing.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who thy tender love towards mankind, hast sent thy Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, to take upon him our flesh, and to suffer death upon the cross, that all mankind should follow the example of his great humility; Mercifully grant, that we may both follow the example of his patience, and also be made partakers of his resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We will have a Good Friday service at 6PM. Easter will be observed at our normal time. God bless, Deacon

Fifth Sunday in Lent plus more

From Deacon Ron Reno:

We will be blessed to have Father Andrews and Anneliese for Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. David and Julie will be here also for another two weeks before they travel back to Michigan. Father will have two acolytes and a Deacon serving this week. God will be pleased that all of His children are doing His work. God willing, our little group will do Mathew 27: The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. It will be a challenge but we can do it for the glory of God.

We finished our annual meeting last week. All officers were chosen and our budget was approved.

The offertory anthem ”Eripe Me Domine” by the choir was exceptional and the communion anthem “Stabat Mater Dolorosa” was equally exceptional. Thank you Nick, Julia, Lynda and Julie sharing your God given talents with us. It is so wonderful to have music with the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.

WE beseech thee, Almighty God, mercifully to look upon thy people; that by thy goodness they may be governed and preserved evermore, both in body and soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hates nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all who are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

We are planning for a Good Friday service as well as a Saturday Easter Service for Holy Week. Father’s homily was exceptional; please take time to read it. God bless, Deacon

Third Sunday in Lent homily and more

From Deacon Ron Reno:

Blessings all around. Father Andrew and his lovely wife Anneliese were here for the Third Sunday in Lent. It is always great for them to be with us. It is a blessing for us that he drives 8 hours to feed God’s children. We always pray for traveling mercies for them.

Father, you mean so much to this mission church. We were also blessed to have David and Julie here. They have moved to Michigan to be closer to his aging parents but will remain members of our small group. We have so many God loving people in this mission church.

Nick, Lynda, Julia and Julie had beautiful Godly music for this Mass. They sang an offertory anthem “Virgo virginium preclaire from Sabet Mater” by Rheinberger in Latin. They always surprise me with their God given talents. Please click on the attached bulletin to see what music was offered for Father Andrews. Father had some input on choices of the music.

WE beseech thee, Almighty God, look upon the hearty desires of thy humble servants, and stretch forth the right hand of thy Majesty, to be our defense against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen “Collect for the third Sunday in Lent”

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hates nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness; may obtain of thee, the God of mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. This collect is be said all through the Lenten season from Ash Wednesday until Palm Sunday.

Continue to pray for Bishop Ashman. He is getting better and praying helps. Our Bishops and Priests need our prayers because the devil is relentless in working against them. The devil is not omnipresent like God; but when we pray, we counter with the spiritual goodness that the devil cannot defeat. God bless, Deacon

Quinquagesima, Lent and more

From Deacon Ron Reno:

We have finished our four ancient “Gesima” Sundays this last weekend and we have done our best in preparation for Lent. We saw that change was coming and have celebrated Jesus’s birth, circumcision and more. We have discovered that Grace is not easily understood and Grace is probably undeserved. We know we are laborers seeking His reward and we worship Him best by living a godly Christian life. We do Him justice by gathering together by doing MP, doing music like “My God, I Love Thee” by Filbert, doing the the pre-sanctified gifts and the Eucharist when Father Andrews is among us. This mission church loves God!

O LORD, who hast taught us that all our doings without charity are nothing worth; Send thy Holy Ghost, and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of charity, the very bond of peace and of all the virtues, without which whosoever liveth is counted dead before thee. Grant this for thine only Son Jesus Christ sake. Amen “Collect for Quinquagesima’

During Holy Week, when the most brutal sufferings of Jesus are put forward to us in the liturgy; the Church really invites us to follow His blood stained footsteps and in a way to carry the cross with Him. We often associate Lent as a time to give up things, change bad behavior, give up alcohol and maybe get in better physical shape. Sacrifice is good and can help us grow in our relationship with the Lord; all of those things are important to consider doing. I think God would look at it a little differently than just giving up things; sure, He wants us to seek penance but I bet He would be pleased if we added things like reading more scripture, maybe doing the stations of the cross at Saint Mary’s Chapel and work on renewing our faith in Jesus. I think He would choose us to add time, talent and treasure for the good of others and seek virtue. Charity, virtue and penance can be our foundation for this Lent and that by itself will strengthen our faith. Embrace adding anything that will help you to spiritually grow: use your Lenten books given to you by Saint John’s to reflect on.

We will do our imposition of ashes this Saturday just before services. Did you know Ash Wednesday dates back to the 11th century for us but the tradition of marking ones forehead with ashes goes back to ancient Hebrew times? PENANCE, does that sound familiar?

Our services the following weekend will be on Sunday, February 25 at 11:15. Please take note of this change.

God willing and the weather permitting, Father Andrews and Anneliese are hopeful to be here March 2, God bless, Deacon

Candlemas, Bishop Ashman and more

From Deacon Ron Reno:

Pray for all of our Bishops. Pray especially for Bishop Ashman who has landed in the hospital again because of Covid. It reminded me of the need to pray for all of our clergy because the Devil is real and he attacks our clergy however he can. We must pray for mercy, the grace of God and His love to combat the Devil. The Devil is not omnipresent but he and his minions do try to destroy the people who bring the truth of God. That is especially true of God’s clergy and His Bishops.

We had a lovely External Solemnity of Candlemas along with the collect for Sexigesima. Candlemas is important to us because its ancient origins go back to the early church about 354AD. For the prelude, the choir did the Antiphons from the Candlemas rite. We chanted the Litany and the offertory anthem of “When Mary to the Temple Went” by Johannes Eccard was especially appropriate. A MUST read is Father Andrew’s attached homily. Father put a wonderful historical narrative to this ancient custom. Thank you Father!

ALMIGHTY, and everlasting God, we humbly beseech thy Majesty, that’s thy only-begotten Son was this day presented in the temple in substance pf our flesh, we may be presented unto thee with pure and clean hearts, by the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen “Collect for Candlemas”

O LORD God, who sees that we put not our trust in anything we do; Mercifully grant that thy power we may be defended against all adversity; through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen

Candlemas-Deacon Mass 2024

Septuagesima, Don Gerlach RIP, King Charles I

We celebrated Septuagesima with a sung MP with the Communion of the Pre-sanctified gifts while also having a external solemnity of Saint Charles Stuart, King and Martyr. We are blessed to be a small mission of God loving individuals and a choir that honors Him and the martyrs of the church. Our job on this earth is to love Him, be humble of heart and do His work and that includes in remembering His saints. Thank you choir for your hard work; I especially loved the anthem sung the “Call to Remembrance” by Richard Tarrant, maybe 1550 AD?

I attended the funeral of Don Gerlach, PHD  in Harvard Nebraska. Don retired to his childhood home in Harvard 2010.  Don was connected with us because of his love of Anglican tradition and liturgy. Don helped to found Saint Mary’s Anglican in Akron, Ohio in 1978. He was a member of that church but came to ours when he could; we claim him as a member also. Reverend Canon Leigh Aaron Kester from Saint Mary’s was the officiant of this service. It was a traditional Anglican service within the Harvard United Methodist Church. An honor guard was there at the grave-site and Don was given a proper Anglican Christian burial. Of your charity, please pray for the repose of Don’s soul.

O LORD, we beseech thee favorably to hear the prayers of thy people, that we, who are justly punished for our offenses, may be mercifully delivered by thy goodness, for the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen

Homily and bulletin are attached. God bless, Deacon
