Since the Winter of 2017 the music at St. John’s has evolved to a point at which sung High Masses are regularly celebrated. We gradually added more and more music as we as a group have learned settings. Since we come from different church homes, our common knowledge of hymnody and service music was not the same, but we’ve had fun learning a common repertoire together.
Our organist and choirmaster Nick Behrens passed away at the end of July, 2025. We loved him dearly and his loss is and will be felt in ways we can’t adequately express in words. Until his departure we had used the Hymnal 1940, and the familiar hymnal service setting of Healey Willan, as well as the Plainsong service setting. We continue to sing weekly hymns from the hymnal with digitally reproduced organ accompaniment until we are able to find an organist.
The digital music is provided with the help of our Junior Warden Skip Sopscak in sharing the work of Father Kurt Henle from All Saints Anglican Church in Traverse City, MI.
